You’re never too old to learn who you are!
As a primarily Young Adult fiction writer, I’ve learned that part of the appeal is watching protagonists come into their own. These books may be for teens and the eponymous young adults, but that doesn’t mean they’re childish. As someone no longer a young adult, I know there’s no limit to what interests anyone. I love to read Young Adult fiction, and I love to write it. So, if you, like me, fall outside that demographic, you’re welcome here. Youthful stories are for the young at heart, not just the young.
In middle school, I read a book called The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by a man named C. S. Lewis. Maybe you’ve heard of it? That book changed something in me. I had always loved to read—that comes with having a bibliophile mother—but I hadn’t considered writing a story until I read that book. I wanted to write something I could share with the world.
However, it wasn’t until the last few years that I distilled my truth. I want to write stories that affect people. My favorite books are the ones that taught me lessons, changed my perspective, or helped me grow. Those are the stories I want to write.
The best stories affect people who are hurting or struggling by offering comfort, perspective, or even a distraction. We seek out stories for many reasons, and I hope my words provide something my readers require. I believe stories come into our lives when we need to hear them most.
